Did You Know?: Theodore K. Lawless
Theodore K. Lawless was the first Black member of the Chicago’s Board of Health.
On the corner of 43rd King Drive sits a mysterious building that has now been adorned with a portrait of Nat King Cole on the side. This building was once widely known as the T.K. Lawless Professional Building. Theodore K. Lawless was a dermatologist who was born in Thibodeaux, Louisiana but attended school (Northwestern) and made a living in Chicago, specifically Bronzeville. Lawless’ private practice on 43rd King Drive would treat up to 100 patients a day. He was also the director of the Supreme Life Building and used his wealth to fund many philanthropic projects in the U.S and Israel. Lawless passed away at Michael Reese Hospital in 1971 at the age of 78. The next time you pass this building take a moment to acknowledge how rich Bronzeville is!
